As Tales of a Backpacker I've tried a lot of different backpacks and I love the Tortuga Travel Backpack – I was actually surprised at how much I loved it! These days I often travel with a wheeled case, or a wheeled backpack, as carrying heavy weight on my back is not ideal now I’m over 40 (eek!!!). However, I could manage this backpack quite nicely, and it didn’t feel too heavy thanks to the adjustable padded straps and hip belt which took a lot of the strain.
It’s a subtle design, with lots of handy features – and a huge plus is the recycled materials, worldwide warranty and the scholarship program to help young people travel abroad.
Overall I have no hesitations in recommending the Tortuga Travel Backpack 40l to other travellers, digital nomads and backpackers looking for an understated and comfortable carry-on backpack for travel.
I tried out a dozen different travel backpacks over the past few years, and this 40L backpack has been a big upgrade.
I normally take 50+ flights per year and have grown accustomed to carry-on only travel, so my top priority was finding a compact & organized backpack. There are other bags out there that fit this criteria, but the Tortuga’s comfortable harness system really put it a step above the rest. The back is well-padded, and the chest+hip straps do a great job distributing the weight of a full bag.
I was initially afraid that the 40L backpack might be too big, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that it fit underneath an airplane seat while still being large enough for all my gear.
The internal organization is thoughtfully placed without being too much, but it took me a couple trips to figure out the best way to use the smaller compartments. After slinging this backpack around Canada, England, Germany, and the US, I can honestly say that this is my new favorite carry-on bag.
I've been backpacking for the last 11 years, and this is the best carry on I've ever used. Easy to pack, tons of storage space/pockets, easy to maneuver through TSA, fits easily in the overhead bin on planes, and can easily double as a day pack or in place of a hiking bag once you get to your final destination. I just got back from flying to Peru for 11 days using only this bag - used it to pack all my stuff, then as a day pack around Cusco while exploring and working remotely, then on a 4 day trek to Machu Picchu through the Andes! Honestly could not recommend more!
This is my go-to bag for 2-week travel. After having numerous issues with lost or delayed luggage, only to get it back destroyed, I started looking for the perfect carry-on. I do a lot of European travel, so I didn't want wheels. This bag is perfect. Lots of organized pockets, the packing cubes are clutch, and I LOVE that it is waterproof. It always goes in the overhead bin, and then I detach the waistband flap to keep under my seat with a light snack and it also stores my headphone and cords. Highly recommend this bag.
As a digital nomad who needs to have all of her work and life with her while traveling the world it is essential to have a carry on that caters to that lifestyle.
This backpack has been a complete game-changer compared to my $30 target roller bag that kept breaking on me and large floppy purse which was not at all secure for my laptop and other tech.
I don't think I have seen a more organized and practical carry on for the frequent traveler / digital nomad. There are pockets for EVERYTHING.
The felt laptop compartment paired with the waterproof lining keeps my laptop safe and secure while country hopping.
10/10 would recommend to anyone looking into purchasing this bag!
